Choosing the Right HF | NFC Reader
Four criteria are particularly important when making a selection:
- Supported Card Technologies - ISO 14443A/B (NFC, MIFARE) only, plus ISO 15693 (ICODE, library), ISO 18092 (peer-to-peer NFC), or multi-frequency with 125 kHz (HID Prox, EM4100) and 13.56 MHz for migration scenarios.
- Interfaces and Data Output - USB-A/C with keyboard wedge (no driver required), PC/SC for professional SDK integration, CCID Plug-and-Play, RS-232/RS-485 for PLC connectivity, and OSDP V2 for security-critical access control systems.
- Security requirements - For standard identification, readers without a SAM slot are sufficient; for regulated industries (banking, e-government, healthcare), readers with a SAM slot, AES encryption, FIDO2 support, or an EAL6+ secure element are mandatory.
- Mounting and protection class - Desktop (IP30/IP32), hygienic for cleanrooms (IP67), industrial panel mount (IP65), or UV- and weather-resistant for outdoor installations (IK10/IP65).
